9 Amazing Ways To Use Wood In Your Renovation

Log homes are making a come back for a reason: the warm, cozy feeling of wood inside your home is almost irresistible for so many people! Incorporating wood, or the look of wood, into your home is easy, and as a result, can be a great design component for your next home renovation.

There’s some science behind that feeling of warmth and comfort that only wood can create. Wood can certainly promote wellness of the mind and a feeling of peace, maybe by giving the sense of being connected to nature.

Therefore, a great interior design can promote creativity, calm, productivity and other moods.

Draft On Site has completed several renovation projects that use wood, or faux wood. We can help you plan your renovation designs to maximize space, while recommending materials that are eco-friendly, beautiful and durable.

Here are 9 ways we recommend to use wood or faux-wood in your renovation:

1. Exterior shingles or panels

Covering the exterior of your home with cedar shingles or panels creates a look that’s absolutely perfect for the West Coast style we love so much in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.

2. Cedar roof shingles

Cedar shingles on a roof are a timeless way to finish the exterior of the home. New cedar shingles have that beautiful golden glow that looks naturally beautiful, and it’s look only improves over time.

3. Butcher block countertops in the kitchen and bathroom

In the kitchen, natural wood butcher block countertops are at once modern and rustic, reminiscent of a French chef’s workspace. As a result, the dents and scratches only add to the character and improve the look over time. Butcher block countertops for the kitchen and even the bathroom are also available in a kaleidoscope of colours and materials – we can certainly help you choose a countertop that’s perfect for your kitchen or bathroom renovation.

4. Natural wood flooring

Whether you install new natural wood panels in your floor or refinish old wood flooring from underneath your carpet, it will result in a gorgeous, warm wood underfoot in your home. To refinish old hardwood floors, use a power sander or use an orbital sander to restore the wood by hand for a more perfect finish. After that, coat with varnish.

5. Eco-friendly faux wood flooring

Wood substitutes are something our clients request more and more for their flooring and wainscoting. Therefore, we recommend Duraplank or XL Flooring. Duraplank is a partially recycled material with a lower price point, and XL Flooring uses twice-recycled material. Both have beautiful wood textures with natural-looking grain and come in a huge variety of colours. Therefore, either option is an excellent alternative to tile for bathroom, laundry and kitchen renovations. They cost $3 to $5 per square foot versus $15 to $20 for tile, and because the vinyl is coloured throughout, any scratches or cuts won’t show up as easily as traditional vinyl.

6. Natural wood furniture

Incorporate hints of natural wood into your decor with natural wood furniture. For example, your decor can include midcentury-style chairs, tables or desks.

8. Wood panelled ceilings

With natural wood, staple 1/4 inch cedar strips to the ceiling as we’ve done on some recent renovation projects. Finish with varnish for a warm, even tropical feel inside your home.

9. Interior wood beams and posts

There are some great natural-wood alternatives to reclaimed wood or original wood posts and beams. Ask us about post-and-beam lookalikes that are nailed to the wall and look very real. Our clients are putting this in corners of their rooms and one client removed his brick fireplace and installed these posts to support his wood beam mantle.
